Facebook is ready to turn off news sharing in Australia

Facebook announced its readiness to turn off the ability for users in Australia to share international and local news on their social network pages if the mandatory code for media market participants comes into force in the country. This was announced on August 31 by the press service of the social network. Assuming that the draft code will become law, we regret to turn off the ability to share local and international news for all Facebook and Instagram users in Australia, Will Easton, Facebook's executive director in Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement. According to the company, such a decision is the only way to protect against the new law, which, as noted, in the future will prevent the development of the entire Australian news and media sector. The statement emphasizes that the Australian government's proposed system, which supposedly should support local media companies, creates a situation in which no business can work. At the same time, the restrictions introduced on Facebook will affect only news all the main products and services for users of the region will remain available in full. According to the news agency, the Australian Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (ACCC) has developed a code of conduct that introduces new rules requiring Facebook, Google and other companies to make deductions to news agencies if they use their content.
